Bridgework has no less than 4 major fractures in it. We watched one climber lead it today despite the very obvious fractures. Time to strap on the third eye people. Trying to predict how these things behave is a fool's errand and anyone who thinks they know what ice will do once it's damaged like this is an idiot. The route was first done back in the late 90's sometime. It takes 500' of WI3/3+ ice, broken by 500-600 feet of snow, then 1000 feet of WI3 to WI4 up the face to the top of the ice just beneath the badly corniced ridgeline. Temps hovered about 15F dropping colder into the afternoon with winds of 10-15mph. Gusts worsened the higher I got, to 50mph, or maybe more? No idea if it's been done before, but really, who cares? :) Wind increased through the day. We topped out the final pitch of the big route in severe wind gusts up to 70-mph in 0F-5F temps. We lost track of how many pitches it took thanks to lots of simul-climbing, but it took us 10 full rappels to get back to the base.

3 comments rockytop Tue, 03 Mar 2015 15:29:48 -0500 Newfoundland Ice climbing http://www.iceclimbingphotos.com/neice-photo-gallery/p11840-newfoundland-ice-climbing.html

by: rockytop

Description: An 1800-foot WI4 ice climb in the backcountry of Newfoundland.
