Testing fate perhaps, but it was solid enough. Now, who's got the sack to lead this thing? This is the pillar Ben called Death on a Stick.

Edited to add - I now know it was led a year ago at WI5+ and dubbed "Polar Vortex Pillar".

Nice shot. Looks like a fun climb and would make for a heady lead / solo. How much did that thing "Thump" while you were on it?

It was surprisingly solid feeling. Despite a crack running through much of it at the top.

Most importantly, in talking this up today, I learned that it was indeed there a year ago and was led by Alan Kline. So for now it is officially "Polar Vortex Pillar" 5+ FA Jan. 2014

And yes, it WAS fun.

There was a significant amount of new ice on the back of the pillar bridging the crack. (Yea, we inspected it before climbing it.)
